Hilton Head Fly Fishing on a windy day

As the title says, with the wind blowin days up to 25 mph I have been getting to The Hilton Head Island area for many of my fly fishing trips.   There are plenty of nooks and cranny’s, flats and creeks to get into and find some fish even in  a gail.   Good customer Jay Shelton and I headed out for 2 days of fisjay2

jay4hing day, one consisted of artic like temps, and ,winds upwards to 25 mph, and yet we still managed fish on the fly!sight casted to at that.  Day 2 consisited of much milder temps and lighter winds. These conditions led us to some great fishing where we found reds tailing all over the place on the low tide mud.  One school of fish was even kind enough to let us stake up and take 4 fish out while still tailing an popping baits within feet of the boat.  There are some reports of striper being caught along the docks at elba island on the north side, bait and fly will do,  don’t think the numbers being caught are very high though, I will investigate further net week as the tides come back down.

Excercising the critters

The winds seem to have been the biggest problem for the month of Dec. That being said we have been managing some good days and have had some tough ones.  One tough day ended with one red on the fly,  not a fun north wind, so I told my guy this grass bed ahead sometimes can hold a good number of specks.  Off to the races! we caught trout after trout for 4 hours using white doa shrimps.  I have found a few stripers since last time I posted but not enough to say it’s on. As a matter of  fact I would say our striper fishery officially sucks this year as well as the past few years.  When the winds and tide are good the sight casting to the reds has been good.  Clear water this time of year really makes it a great time for stalking these fish.trouttonnerdennisdennis2
