Winter is in full swing, but not to worry here in the south.  When the weather was warm in December the fish were acting a bit funky. With a ton of bait around and the dolphin not giving the reds a hard time, it seemed as though the reds were coming off the grass early and staying a bit deep until the tide was at the bottom..  Well a couple of cold snaps and fleeing bait has put an end to that nonsense !!  The dolphin have become very interested in eating reds now that the bait has pulled out, and the fishing has been really good as long as the weather is on our side.  There has also been good numbers of Albies sitting off the coast, with a number of good reports coming in.  Couple of buddies have been finding them in the 5 to 10 mile range and crushing them on fly and spin.  I wish I had a bit bigger boat to go have fun chasing them.  When the weather is good for my boat I know the reds will be going off and it’s hard to take that chance looking.

Paul Rankin wanted to get in on some winter time action this week, and we did get some fish, although the clouds made it a bit tougher.  It never ceases to amaze me how a thin cloud can shut out the lights on you.  We started out with a bang, Paul had to catch a fish on the first cast to a nice group of fish cruising through the grass.  Anyone who has spent some time on the water knows the first cast syndrome.  After Paul and I got so politely got cut off on the flat that we were fishing we decided a change in venue was in order.  We headed to another flat and smacked a fish as soon as we pulled in, then things became a tougher with more clouds and a little more wind.  We managed a couple more, but with the sun getting lower and the wind picking up we headed for home.
